ThisIsNottingham.co.uk - Steel Panther Interview

+ posted by Sez

We're Motley Crue, Whitesnake, Poison, Bon Jovi, Guns N' Roses," blurts Stixx Zadinia. "That's what we sound like, plus a big smack in the face that's Steel Panther."

That's quite a dangerous cocktail and an impressive legacy to live up to.

"We don't like to think too much," says the Steel Panther drummer.

"I try not to focus on too many things at one time. I never really think 'Man... Motley Crue, we have some big shoes to fill'. I think we're wearing our own perfect shoes more like steel-toed boots."

Nowadays, metal is known more for darkness, angst and depression but Stixx reckons that it doesn't have to be this way.

"There are some really great modern metal bands out there, but they sound angry. They sound mad at the fact that... well, I don't know what they're mad at. But they're mad at something. You only get one life, why not party it up? Just have fun."

He adds: "Metal is life, for me. I live for metal."

Tongue firmly in cheek, fist aloft in the air, Stixx continues: "Collectively we're bringing back a time when party all night, and just smile, that you're just rocking out with hot chicks and your bros. We're bring back a time when you could just enjoy yourself, you know: enjoy life, enjoy music."

That hedonistic message has struck a chord in the UK and Europe.

"Honestly, the UK has been tremendous for us. The fans, the press, the promoters have all been amazing. The fans know their metal and they like it a certain way and if they like you, they will die for you. I can't say enough good things about the UK. They're very obsessive but not in a freakish way."

Their accurate portrayal of old school rock has also attracted a great deal of admiration from their peers; most notably from Slipknot's masked leader Corey Taylor and ex-Darkness lycra wearing high wailer Justin Hawkins. The two feature on Steel Panther's current album, Feel the Steel.

"In the studio, Justin and Corey are professionals and great singers and great guys. Those guys have balls, and they're not afraid to put them on the line and say 'this is what I'm down with'.

"Corey added a lot of grit to it. Justin added a lot of sweet, saucy harmony and soaring vocals. They both have contrasting styles, but they both killed it for us."

The band play Rock City next week and to witness their live experience is to witness a fairly mind-blowing experience, he says.

"We are like a giant circus full of porno midgets, animals with a heavy metal soundtrack. If you haven't seen us then you're missing out on a life changing experience."

Certainly, the experience of Steel Panther is not for the faint-hearted. But if you like your metal to be hard, your rock to be righteous and your music to be dangerously infective, then the band have a very simple ethos to follow.

"Really, that's all we do. We play, we rock and we party."
