The Darkness, Central Docks, Liverpool Summer Pops

+ posted by FlamingWhopper

UNTIL The Darkness released their extremely successful debut album - Permission To Land - there had been something missing from the world of popular music for many years.

There was no showmanship anymore, no truly fun rock songs that went for it at full speed. This changed when Justin Hawkins and band mates burst on to the scene with the addictive, I Believe In Thing Called Love.

Last night's show was opened by supporting act Roadstar, an upcoming rock band. With their headbanging riffs and charismatic front man Richie Heavanz they put me in mind of legends Guns 'n' Roses. It was real unapologetic rock with remnants of the 1980s style, so skinny jeans and long hair all round.

They really knew how to fire up the audience and were the perfect opening act. It's definitely worth keeping an eye out for their recently released debut album, Grand Hotel.

With the audience suitably excited it was time for the main attraction, enter The Darkness. When Justin swaggers on stage in a black studded suit, paired with pink shirt, starting us off with the energetic One Way Ticket To Hell.... And Back, the audience is already standing and remain so for the entire show.

Performing songs from their first album and the second CD, also called One Way Ticket To Hell... And Back, they played hits such as the nostalgic Friday Night, the anthemic Black Shuck and Is It Just Me? They left us in no doubt that the band have triumphed over the difficult second album syndrome and continue to wow with fantastically audacious tracks.

Their bassist, and newest edition to the band, Richie Edwards paid homage to rock heroes AC/DC with an electrifying rendition of Highway To Hell. The audience, as it had been for much of the show, was a sea of waving arms, clapping hands and exhilarated screams.

When asked about performing for the Summer Pops Justin had said: "To play for the people of Liverpool is a privilege. Liverpool will be rocked." And just as he promised, rocked we were.
