Tigertailz singer works with Justin Hawkins

Tigertailz vocalist Kim Hooker has told Classic Rock that he has been working with forrmer Darkness singer Justin Hawkins (now fronting Hot Leg) on a new version of the Tigertailz classic Love Bomb Baby.Says Hooker: “I never knew that Justin was such a big fan of the song, but the idea was for us to share the vocals. We’ve recorded part of it, but haven’t yet finished it, because Justin’s got other commitments.”

Love Bomb Baby is, of course, from the Welsh glam band’s 1990 album Bezerk. The band performed the album in its entirety for the first time ever, on Saturday October 10 at The Borderline in London. And they might be repeating the process.

“We’ve had so many people say they wanted to see it,” explains guitarist Jay Pepper. “But couldn’t make it to London. So it would almost be unfair of us not to do it again. We go to Northern Ireland for the first time, on October 17 [The Diamond Rock Club in Ahoghill], and how can we NOT do Bezerk?”

The band – now also featuring bassist Glenn Nailz and drummer Matt Blakout – are also considering releasing a live version of Bezerk next year, although this isn’t definite.

“We have talked about this, yes,” admits Hooker. “We’ll record all the shows where we do it, and then see how it sounds. Right now, we’re also working on a new studio album. But that could be put on the back burner for this.”

Tigertailz have admitted that the death two years ago of bassist Pepsi Tate, from pancreatic cancer, nearly caused them to pack in the band.

“Our first reaction was to do just that,” says Pepper. “But, by the time we got to Pepsi’s funeral we all felt that perhaps the right thing was to carry on.

“For us now it’s all about enjoying ourselves,” he adds. “We pick what gigs we want to do. And the reaction has been amazing. We’ve also gotten to play with some of our heroes, like Ace Frehley and Mötley Crüe.

“We’re just having a great time, and are still surprised we’ve got this second chance. It’s not about money at all. That’s not our motivation at all.

“I remember walking onstage for our first gig back together in 2005 [after a 10-year hiatus]. It was in Newcastle, supporting Y&T. Someone said my guitar wasn’t working. I thought, ‘That’s it. Why are we bothering if it’s gonna be a hassle.’ But everything worked out so well, and we’ve not looked back.”
